Be a part of America’s most important tradition!

Throughout our history, the inauguration has served as an opportunity for the incoming president to unite the country, to set an agenda, and to chart a new course. But this event is also an important time for Americans to reflect on their values and decide how they will work to impact the future. This January, Close Up’s Inauguration 2021: Defining Visions for Our Future will help students identify their own priorities and consider the actions they can take to make their voices heard.

Over the course of three sessions designed and facilitated by Close Up instructors, students will gather in an inclusive virtual space with peers from across the country.

  • Session 1: The week before inauguration, students will consider the event in the context of history and discuss the ideas they would like the incoming president to prioritize.
  • Special Student Opportunity – MLK Day (optional): On Martin Luther King Day, a day of national service, students will engage with representatives of service organizations and consider the types of community work that can help them stay involved in their communities.
  • Session 2: On Inauguration Day, students will join a watch party and a reflection to discuss the inaugural address and consider whether the president’s priorities match their own.
  • Session 3: The following day, after hearing from a panel of speakers about their expectations for the first 100 days, students will consider the changes they would like to bring about and formulate a vision of themselves as empowered citizens.
