Civic Ambassadors

This opportunity is open to students in grades 7-12 who have a demonstrated interest in civics, community engagement, and making a positive impact on the world. Previous participation in a Close Up program is not required, but this program is a wonderful follow-up opportunity for students who want to build upon the Close Up experience, join a network of like-minded peers, and continue the work in their schools and communities. 

The first step is to complete the application. You will receive more information by email. The application includes essay questions and a one-minute video or short essay response. You will also have the chance to share your goals as a Civic Ambassador. As part of the application process, you must complete an introductory webinar and a 15-minute onboarding call. 

Civic Ambassadors serve for a minimum of one year and can renew the role annually. 

All Civic Ambassadors are expected to complete at least two civic and impact-oriented activities during the year-long term (approximately 10-15 hours annually). Close Up will provide monthly toolkits, recommendations, and guidance for organizing impactful activities at school and ensure all Civic Ambassadors are equipped with best practices, resources, and skills to have maximum impact. Civic Ambassadors are also invited to attend Close Up-hosted webinars and events that introduce them to national leaders in the civics and leadership space and help them earn civic engagement hours, including town halls, speaker series, and other collaborative gatherings. Civic Ambassadors will use the MobileServe app to track all civic activities, submit photos, and give feedback. 

The microcredential, which students can share on their resumes and high school/college applications, is available to Civic Ambassadors who:

• Organize at least four civic and impact-oriented activities during their year-long term; and 
• Complete at least two reflection activities (one written, one video). 

The additional activities to earn a microcredential are optional and are not a requirement to become a Civic Ambassador. 

Yes! All participation, reflection, and documentation of events you lead is tracked and verified on a mobile app provided by Close Up. The tracking app will also tally community service and engagement hours to help you meet graduation requirements or earn your state’s civic engagement diploma seal (available to students in Arizona, California, Georgia, Nevada, New York, and Virginia as of 2024). Please talk to your teacher/advisor about specific graduation and/or civic seal requirements. 

By becoming a Civic Ambassador, you are joining a nationwide network of youth leaders learning how to convene people around important issues, participate in local government, and promote the value of being an engaged citizen. You will engage with local leaders, develop leadership skills, and receive valuable mentorship opportunities with Close Up staff and professionals. Close Up will provide guidance on how to organize and host events and ensure you are equipped with best practices, resources, and skills needed to have maximum impact across the school and local community.
