New Americans Middle School Program

Discover your role in American democracy!

On Close Up’s five-day/four-night New Americans Middle School Program, immigrant and migrant students meet with peers from schools nationwide to learn how government impacts their lives and how they can make a difference. Students also gain the skills they need to become more involved in their communities back home.

Guided by our highly trained instructors, participants in this program have the opportunity to:

• Discuss the historical events that have shaped our nation through visits to D.C.’s must-see sites;
• Gain a personal connection to the people, places, and events that make this country so unique; 
• Explore U.S. history through our nation’s most significant documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights; 
• Launch into another stratosphere and explore the history and science of aviation and spaceflight at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum; and 
• Take on the role of a member of Congress to debate and vote on today’s most pressing issues in an interactive congressional deliberation.
