American Indian Issues Program

This program is designed to help both native and non-native students learn about current issues in Indian Country.

Gain a greater understanding of Indian law and policy from experts!

During this six-day/five-night program, students explore the connection between U.S. and Native American history. As students get an insider’s view of the U.S. political system and how it relates to policies affecting American Indian tribes, they gain the skills and attitudes they need to advocate for the issues most important to them and their tribes.

 With Close Up, students have the opportunity to:

  • Hear DC policymakers and experts unpack tribal issues at a native issues seminar;
  • Explore the National Mall and its famous memorials and monuments to discuss the Native American impact on war efforts
  • Visit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and examine the ways in which American Indians have been part of the national identity since before the country’s founding; and
  • Debate the most pressing issues facing our nation in a Mock Congress.

Participation in a Close Up program requires parent or guardian approval for any participant under 18 years of age. Learn how we keep all students safe, secure, and supervised on every program.
